It was more than 30 years ago when Uncle Henry's, Maine's Swap or Sell Guide,
hit the marketplace. Much has changed in the past 30 years, but Uncle Henry's is still lettin'
downeast Mainers place an ad for free!
You don't have to be from Downeast Maine to place a free ad in Uncle Henry's, the WEEKLY Swap
It or Sell It Guide is now distributed throughout northern New England, Massachusetts, and New
Brunswick, Canada and is for sale at many convenience stores, supermarkets, and auto parts
stores and the form on the back page allows for a free private party classified ad.
This classified ad magazine is about the size of TV GUIDE but not nearly as colorful or pretty.
Every week Uncle Henry's is packed with fresh classified ads. Ads that tell a story and paint a
picture. Many readers purchase Uncle Henry's, not because they are looking to buy a particular
item, but rather to browse the classified ads for entertainment, and the chance of finding a real
downeast bargain.
Uncle Henry's was founded by Henry Faller, of Rockland Maine, in 1969. It was Faller's idea to
charge a nickel for the magazine, but then allow readers to run one classified ad for free, using
the form on the magazine's back page. That concept is still in place today - except the price and
the thickness of the publication have both increased.
Uncle Henry's is owned and operated by Uncle Henry's Inc., and company President Justin Sutton
oversees the entire operation. The current ownership purchased Uncle Henry's from Henry Faller
in 1983 after months of negotiations.
Justin Sutton is happy about the continued growth of Uncle Henry's, he told ME Living "both the
number of internet visitors and sales of the printed guide are growing". Sutton mused "the internet
is a great source of intrigue and frustration". But the numbers prove you can grow your internet web
site and increase your printed sales simultaneously.
A new issue of Uncle Henry's Guide is available every week; the new issue is distributed every Thursday
but internet users can see it all online at 8:00am. The entire classified ad section is online, with
the exception of the display ads - they may only be found in the printed edition.
